Projector Buying Guide

What is $/Lumen?

The hero metric on this site is $/lumen — the price divided by the projector's brightness in ANSI lumens. Lower is better: you're getting more light output per dollar spent. This lets you compare projectors of wildly different price points on equal footing.

How bright do you need?

Brightness matters most based on your viewing environment:

  • Dark room / home theater: 1,000–2,000 lumens is plenty.
  • Living room with some ambient light: 2,500–3,500 lumens.
  • Bright room or daytime use: 4,000+ lumens.
  • Large venue / conference room: 5,000–10,000+ lumens.

Be wary of "peak" or "equivalent" lumen claims from budget brands — look for ANSI lumen ratings from independent reviews.

Resolution

  • 1080p (FHD): Best value for most use cases. Enough for movies, sports, gaming.
  • 4K / UHD: Noticeably sharper on large screens (120"+). More expensive.
  • 720p: Only for budget portable projectors or short-throw bar projectors.

Throw Ratio

Throw ratio = distance from lens to screen ÷ screen width. A 2.0 throw ratio at 10 ft gives a 5 ft wide image (~70" diagonal).

  • Long throw (1.5–2.5): Standard projectors, needs room.
  • Short throw (0.4–1.0): Can sit close to the wall.
  • Ultra short throw (<0.4): Sits inches from wall, great for living rooms.

Contrast Ratio

Higher contrast means deeper blacks and more vivid images. Anything above 10,000:1 is excellent for dark room viewing. For bright rooms contrast matters less — raw brightness dominates.

Lamp vs. LED vs. Laser

  • Lamp: Cheap upfront, but lamps need replacement (~$100–200) every 2,000–5,000 hours.
  • LED: 20,000–30,000 hour lifespan, low brightness, good for portable units.
  • Laser: 20,000+ hours, instant-on, excellent color, best long-term value despite higher upfront cost.

Tips for Finding the Best Deal

  • Sort by $/lumen to find the best brightness-per-dollar.
  • Compare the cheapest variant's price across multiple retailers in the table.
  • Check for open-box or refurbished options from the manufacturer.
  • Major sale events (Prime Day, Black Friday) can cut 20–40% off projector prices.
